The R letter becomes very powerful and introduces you to our world. It’s the start of five words that tell our sustainable approach in all the phases of our business.
ECO SUSTAINABILITY
A Value for Berto
Being a Sustainable Business for Berto is not the end goal but a shared value. Over the years, all production processes have been redesigned and improved to ensure maximum efficency. We think that Sustainability is a consciously process truly based on Research and Innovation, a journey that we’re proud to follow since 1887.
THE production PROCESS
In details how we operate in a sustainable way
1
YARNS SUPPLY
1.
YARNS SUPPLY
EXTRAORDINARY PRODUCTS ARE THE RESULT OF EXTRAORDINARY RAW MATERIALS
OUR CHOICES:
• BCI Cotton
• Organic Cotton
• Ecotec® Yarn: coming from the regeneration of our own waste of production chain
• European Linen
• European Cotton

OUR METHOD: all our yarns are tested by our labs with high accuracy.

OUR GOAL: the highest quality, in every fabric, in time.
2
INDIGO DYEING PROCESS
2.
INDIGO DYEING PROCESS
COLOURS GO BEYOND THE IMAGINATION
OUR CHOICES: • Natural Indigo GOTS approved • Pre-reduced Indigo • Natural and biodegradable starch • DETOX e REACH approved chemicals

OUR METHOD: In our dyeing production process there is less use of tanks of water and less chemicals than a standard process.

OUR GOAL: The yarn comes out dyed with a great intensity, but using less water and chemicals.T he fabrics will be easier to be washed by laundries.

Dyeing excellence lives in these dyes: BLU, EVO, SKY, 03, BIO BLU, BIO BLACK, CARBON.
3
WEAVING PROCESS
3.
WEAVING PROCESS
QUALITY, INNOVATION, FLEXIBILITY
OUR CHOICES: • Energy efficient looms • Highly efficient conditioning plant • Led lighting system • Significant reduction of CO2 emissions

OUR METHOD: Be sustainable also means be innovative. The new organisation of our weaving department means: • Flexibility • Really important reduction of CO2 emissions • Maximum quality of the workplace for employees.

OUR GOAL: Give life to extraordinary fabrics by weaving threads, respecting the environment and people.

4
FINISHING PROCESS
4.
FINISHING PROCESS
TECHNOLOGY ENOBLES FABRIC
OUR CHOICES: • ECO FINISHING / Thanks to the use of the ozone we have -85% use of water and -32% of CO2 emissions. And laser treatment is made easier. Ozone also sanitizes fabrics. • MATEX® ECO APPLICATOR / Finalist at ITMA sustainable awards in 2015. This machinery puts chemicals on the fabric in a dry way (no water).

OUR METHOD: • We are doing this using the most sustainable practices • With innovative machineries • And chemicals that are all DETOX and REACH approved • Led lightning plant

OUR GOAL: • The aim of the finishing operations is to give the fabric a good appearance, the right handle and prepare it for the manufacturing. • Minimizing the use of water and the emissions of CO2
5
QUALITY CONTROL
5.
QUALITY CONTROL
CONTROL, CONSTANCY, CUSTOMIZATION AND AGAIN CONTROL
Continuous controls during the production process allow us to maintain constant, high quality standards in time. Specific tests, based on our clients’ specifications, carried out on the production allow us to get closer to every request and so offer total product customization.

The main steps:
• VISUAL CONTROL
• FABRIC PHYSICAL PARAMETERS CONTROL
• FABRICS LABORATORY: check of the consistency between the technical sheet and the product performance. This operation is performed after the fabric creation and every 6 months to ensure an excellent quality level.
PIANETA FABRICS
The sustainable avantgarde
All Berto’s PIANETA fabrics are GRS certified.

Global Recycle Standard (GRS) acknowledges the crucial importance of recycling for the growth of a sustainable production and consumption model; it aims to encourage the reduction of resource consumption (virgin raw materials, water and energy) and to increase the quality of recycled products. GRS provides for the issue of an environmental statement verified by a third party to provide evidence of:
• the content of recycled materials in their products (both intermediate and finished)
• the compliance with environmental and social criteria in all sectors of the production chain.
RE-GENERATED COTTON YARN (65%)

RE-CYCLED STRETCH WEFT

PRE-REDUCED INDIGO DYEING

NATURAL AND BIODEGRADABLE SIZING

ECO - FINISHING
Choosing consciously is choosing organic
Certifications: all Berto’s organic fabrics are GOTS certified.

•The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the most important standard that guarantees the consumer that organic textile products are obtained in compliance with stringent environmental and social criteria applied at all levels of production, from the collection in the field of natural fibers to the subsequent manufacturing phases, up to the labeling of the finished product.

•The following are certifiable according to GOTS: textile products; manufacturing activities; chemicals for the textile industry.

• In Berto we have a wide offer of fabrics made with Organic Cotton, a kind of cotton grown using methods and products with a low environmental impact. Moreover, two of these fabrics are dyed with a special Indigo Dyeing. • The Indigo Dye used for these fabrics is Natural and stems from the processing of the leaves of the plant Indigofera Tinctoria, which is cultivated in South India.
H2O
DEPURATION SYSTEM
In Berto we have a biological and certified sewage treatment.
Biological = it uses bacteria to purify water (no chemicals) and allows the conversion of sediments (sludge) into fertilizer.

This system transforms and separates dirty water in two parts:
• Clean water that goes back in the river
• Some kind of biological sediments that can be used to fertilize the fields

The process that takes place in nature is reproduced in a concentrated and enhanced way.
